Description

The “Pygmalion Cape” table is an artwork for admiration.

You won’t confuse it with any dining, coffee and other tables of ours. It’s truly extraordinary. We did everything as usual: an elm slab filled with epoxy around it. But then we decided to make its tabletop as unusual and natural as almost wild.

It could be called a new mainland or a desert island, but it is Pygmalion Cape. And no other way. Here is why:

Pygmalion has two meanings, surprisingly both fitting this table. The first — it’s the old name of the cape on the Great Nicobar Island in India. It is considered the southernmost point of the country. It was renamed after the Indian Prime Minister Gandhi — Indira. The picture which appears on the tabletop  is symbolizing the farthest point, something so undiscovered and primal.

Pygmalion was also the name of a well-known fictitious character, who created from ivory a statue of a beautiful woman and fell in love with her. On his entreaties, Aphrodite revived the statue, naming her Galatea, and she became the artist’s wife.

Metaphorically, Pygmalion is someone in love with his creation. So this wooden coffee table is an open declaration of love. Surely, we are all little Pygmalions. Because it’s impossible not to love something so natural. Something it grew.
